Elk Knob, highest point in Watauga County, North Carolina - 5520 ft
My name is Robin Lowe. I teach English to high school students in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where I was lucky enough to grow up. I am starting my 17th year of teaching this August. This past year, I embarked on a professional development journey, as a Teachers for Global Classroom fellow. I explored and expanded my teaching philosophies and practices through rigorous course work, a national symposium and an incredible three week field experience in several parts of India. This website is a compendium of resources I have collected through my experiences, meant to be shared with other teachers and community members as a global education guide. Global education means more than learning about varying geography and religions. True global education seeks to fuse the local with the global in a effort to preserve and value culture as an aspect of individual identity. Successful global educators seek authentic experiences and design their lesson plans to evoke curiosity in their students - who will investigate the world, weigh differing perspectives, communicate in a variety of formats, and take action on issues that matter, locally and globally. Global competence, from my mountain perspective, is a lot like standing atop a 5520 ft mountain being able to take in the view around you and still remain grounded where you are.
